Amy:

This is the puppy training podcast episode 127 grooming tips with Julia from pup well this podcast designed to help you on your journey of becoming best friends through love and learning as you train your own dog from home, and I'm here to help you every step of the way. This is the puppy training podcast, and I'm your host, Amy Jensen. Hey, everybody, welcome to the puppy training Podcast. I'm so glad you're here today. I have a guest with me. We've tried to coordinate this for a while now. And I'm super glad that she could come on today. So her name is Julia. She's from puppet well, and I'm going to let her introduce herself. Tell us a little bit about what she does and how she got started. So welcome, Julia.

Julia:

Thanks so much, Amy. It's so fun to be on here and it has taken us a minute to finally get together so sorry. Oh, great. finally be together and I'm excited to share you with my clients. So okay, well, I have loved Baxter & Bella, for forever. I started with Baxter & Bella using it as a breeder. And that's how I started pup well, so like Amy said, I'm Julia, the owner and founder of pup well, and we have been in business just over a year. So we launched December 1 of 2021. And it taken almost a year to even launch but we sell grooming products and education for dogs and we focus on hypoallergenic dogs and doodles, but our products work for all breeds, especially long haired breeds, and we sell for different basically bundles. So we've got a nail duo which teaches you how to trim your dog's nails and comes with nail clippers and a Dremel. And then we have our shear set, which is classic shear set. It's got a straight shear, a curved shear and a Thinning Shear with a metal tooth comb, all wrapped up in a case. And then we've got our basic kit, which is a slicker brush, DeMatting Comb, fine tooth comb, and metal tooth comb all in an organization bag. So that's just we call it the basic kit because it's everything you need to do, you know, at least this is for somebody who doesn't want to really do much at home. But we want we will say you've got to basically do this, you've got to basically brush your dog to keep them from being matted. And then our, our ultimate kit includes all of that plus a suction cup leash, which like helps keep your dog in the tub or in place. And, and like air forceps to remove the dog's ear hair. But really our goal here at Bob well is to have beautiful dogs that are well taken care of and use the best products. So I started out my career, you know, 15 years ago as a cosmetologist. And so I've always loved doing hair. And then I got into breeding and bred for five years, and the two really combined pretty effortlessly with grooming my dogs. But at the beginning, I didn't quite know what to do. And that's was my struggle was going to the groomer all the time. And really feeling like I was spending a lot of money when this is something I should be able to do at home and really wanting, you know my dog to have a long fluffy coat that was like, originally, like my biggest goal, it's like I just want this like big fluffy teddy bear and I wanted to have this long coat and I wanted to look professionally groomed all the time, so I kept going to the groomer and it was costing so much money so that's when I brought out my cosmetology tools and started doing just trimming on my own and learning and mentoring and groomers and so you know, kind of like a five year story of just learning how to grow my dog at home and sending dogs home similar to you know, when I started you turn to Baxter & Bella as a breeder because you're like, you know what, I know my puppies need all this information, but I can't give it to them. You know, one of the things I said to my families is like I feel like my puppies are these little like baby birds. And I'm the mama bird and I'm like ready to push them out of the nest, but like you are in charge of them now you've got to do this I believe in you. You can't but like I know everything about breeding but I don't know everything about training and that's the next step. So it was so amazing to be able to just like say hey, but I can't be your guide here but Baxter & Bella can be you know, here's where you should go with your puppies because you probably just need to be socialized they need to continue all of that. And so that is my hope with Pablo is that we're the Baxter & Bella of grooming, you know that you can turn to a professional groomer In a team in pup well, and learn, because so on top of you know, I kind of chatted about our products, but we sell a whole grooming education course, which is anything from nail trimming, to how to brush your dog, how to bathe them, how to dry them, how to trim their, or how to clean their ears, how to brush their teeth, just really general parent course that they need to know. And anyone can watch it anytime. So that part is included with the ultimate grooming kit. But other than that, you can I don't know if that's clear. But the products I don't know.

Amy:

That was great. No, I love how your story and my story are similar. Yeah, I do to ground and my training, my love for training, and then I met them and you took your cosmetology expertise and missed it with your dog breeding or you're raising a dog.

Julia:

So absolutely, yeah, I was just telling my friends that I found this book in my mom's basement that was from when I was in third grade, that it was just like, had these pictures and kind of little things. And then at the end it said, What do you want to be when you grow up and I said I wanted to work at I wanted to do hair, and I wanted to work at a dog store. And I gasped when I read it didn't surprise me because I always loved animals and always, you know, like loved hair. But the fact that truly I am doing both of those things like easily would make me cry, like, oh my gosh, I can't believe this. And it just is like so exciting to be able to tell my kids like you can be whatever you want to be. And it's pretty amazing to get to do what we both love and are passionate about. And really that's I mean, and both of them are educating people. I just want to help people, because I know what it felt like to be like, okay, my dog is matted, what do I do, and there's nowhere to turn to. And I don't know what tools to use. And it

Amy:

So I appreciate your efforts, because I've turned to your tools many times and they're so great. Yeah, I just took a lot of work to figure it out. love your story. I love how it came about. And it reminds me of my story. I love it. I get asked this a lot. How often should I bathe my dog? What would you say?

Julia:

Yeah. So this is a interesting, so many things in grooming, you're gonna get a different answer from everybody. My suggestion would be if you want to bathe your dog every week, bathe your dog every week. But realistically, in our lives, I would say every two to three weeks, like even every four weeks, especially if you have a hypoallergenic dog, I would for sure say bathe once a month. But if you're using and so now let me backtrack on that because you can't just use any shampoo and conditioner. One you can't use human shampoo and conditioner the pH balance is not going to be correct for a dog's coat. You can't use Dawn dish soap you know, you can't use these crummy products, make sure you're using a professional grade shampoo and conditioner. Now I have like links on my Instagram account because this is a question I get asked a lot. But nature specialties I groom those are the two that are my favorite. And we're actually working on launching our own because I feel like the grooming product world is confusing. Again, like for dog owners. So just make sure you're reading the instructions that you're diluting the shampoo and conditioner correctly when you are doing those baths at home and make sure you're really washing it out. And then the next step would be following it up with drying your dog because if you just wash your dog at home, that's where matting is going to occur, especially for hypoallergenic dogs, they are going to you know the hair is going to stick together and dry. And it just creates those knots and those tangles so make sure that if you don't own a high velocity dryer, you're just even using your own home dryer, but I highly recommend getting a high velocity dryer, because that is going to help your dog not be cold. But also that's going to help with that mounting process. So I know that's pretty vague. But hopefully that clears it up for anyone who's you know, kind of struggling with when should I give my dog a bath. So like one thing I say and we talk a lot about socializing puppies, is I say, bathe your puppy every week get them used to that process because this is such a huge stage of socialization and they need to get used to what's to come and baby things to come.

Amy:

And having the right tools makes a big difference and that's where you guys thrive. So on that note, do you have a favorite grooming tool?

Julia:

Um, I would say slicker brush for sure. slicker brushes, especially ours is just as so many of these little not needles but you know, little pins and they they're at an angle. And that can just like rake through your dog's coat and get deep there extra long too. So it's hard without showing you, you know, seeing it. But this brush is seriously made for a doodle or hypoallergenic dogs coat, it can just get through the coat and get down to the base of your dog's coat better than anything, and you can cover a lot of space. So I have a very big love for a slicker brush, but they all play a role. Um, I heard somebody say, it's like cleaning your house. And what could you say is the most important tool? Well, they all serve different purposes. You know, you're your bride or your son, you're going to sweep, you're going to dust you're going to scrub like they all play and contribute to cleaning your house, which is the same thing as grooming tools. I love that analogy that was reminding me of you know, I pull out my slicker brush, but then I pull out my 10 inch metal comb and I use, you know, together you almost need both to help you do or even the de matter tool that you have is phenomenal. You're going through with this liquor and it gets stuck. You're like, oh, let me pull out this tool and then I can work through the math. Yes, exactly. So yeah, I'm like second follow up. Oh, I love the DeMatting tool. Oh, but I love the fine tooth comb to be able to get out those goobers, but I just think you get the most done with a slicker brush,

Amy:

so I'll be honest, I had never used a fine tooth comb for goobers. Yeah, sound you it's amazing. Yes, definitely. You get those goobers. Yeah, I think coming out and like I have a brush for this.

Julia:

Yes. works much better than our thumbs.
